How to get named by ChatGPT: AI visibility in 7 steps
Growbot · · 7 min read
ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity name a brand when they find it on pages they're allowed to read and consider credible. You get into their answers by allowing the assistants' search bots, writing your pages so they can be quoted, and appearing on exactly the comparison pages the assistants use as sources.
How do AI assistants decide whom to name?
For questions like “Which tool helps against spoofed senders?” the assistants search the web, read a few pages and summarise. Whoever appears on those pages gets named: on your own website and above all in comparisons, lists and forums the assistant trusts.
So AI visibility isn't luck. It can be measured and improved on purpose.
1. Let the right bots in
For answers, the search bots matter: OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (ChatGPT), Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User (Claude), PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User (Perplexity). If your robots.txt blocks them, no assistant can cite you. You may block training bots such as GPTBot or CCBot; that costs no visibility in answers.
- Open robots.txt and look for “Disallow: /” for these bots.
- On Cloudflare check “Block AI Scrapers and Crawlers” and “Bot Fight Mode”.
- Test it in 10 seconds with our AI bot checker.
2. Put the answer in the first paragraph
Assistants prefer sentences that answer a question completely. Start every important page with two or three sentences that say what you offer, for whom and what it costs. Explanations and stories come after.
3. Use questions as headings
Headings like “How much does DomainRadar cost?” or “Who is it for?” match the questions people ask assistants. The short answer goes underneath. Add FAQ schema so search engines reliably recognise the pairs.
4. Provide facts, numbers and tables
Concrete details get quoted more than marketing language: prices, limits, supported platforms, date of the last update. Comparison tables and lists are especially easy for assistants to pick up.
5. Find the pages the AI cites
Ask the assistants your buyers' questions and look at the sources they give. They're often “best tools for …” lists, comparison sites, directories and forum posts. That's where you need to be. Growbot does this daily and turns every cited page into a target with a draft listing request.
6. Show who's behind the product
An about page, imprint, contact details, named authors and Organization schema with links to your profiles (sameAs) make your site more trustworthy, for people and machines alike.
7. Measure it every week
Ask the same questions every week and note: are you named? In which position? Who instead? Only then can you see whether your changes work. Growbot measures this automatically for ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity.
