Hooks that work: 8 openers for posts and Reels

· · 6 min read

A hook is the first line or first second of a post. It decides whether someone keeps reading or keeps scrolling. Good hooks are concrete, address a problem your audience has and open a question the rest of the post answers. Only your own numbers show which pattern works for you.

Which hook patterns are there?

  • The concrete scene: “Your quote is out. The customer says they never got it.”
  • The number: “40% enter customer data into ChatGPT.” Only with a real source.
  • The direct question: “Is someone faking your sender?”
  • The contradiction: “More posts won't bring you more customers.”
  • Before and after: “Three months ago 0 sign-ups a week. Today 40.”
  • The mistake: “The most expensive mistake on your pricing page.”
  • The how-to: “How to check in 30 seconds whether ChatGPT names you.”
  • The confession: “I spent a year building for the wrong problem.”

What makes a hook strong?

It's as concrete as possible, names your buyers' situation in their own words and only promises what the post delivers. Numbers work when they're true and sourced. Clickbait that doesn't pay off costs trust and reach.

How do I find out which hook works for me?

Test several patterns on the same topic and compare not just likes but clicks, saves and sign-ups. Mind the sample size: two posts tell you nothing yet.

Growbot tags every post by hook, topic and call to action and compares results with sound statistics. Only when there is enough data does the hook library show a pattern as the winner.

Do the patterns work for videos too?

Yes. In a video the hook has to come in the first second as text and speech. Many people watch without sound, so the hook always belongs on screen too.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a hook be?

On LinkedIn one line before “see more”, in a Reel one to two seconds. Shorter is almost always better.

Should I use emojis?

If they fit your brand. More important is that the sentence works without them.
